Real Madrid Eyes Jarrad Branthwaite as Ancelotti Plans Defensive Overhaul

Carlo Ancelotti is already planning ahead for Real Madrid’s 2025/26 season and has set his sights on strengthening the defense. With ongoing uncertainty about his own future in Madrid, the Italian coach remains focused on rebuilding his squad, particularly at the back.

The club is currently facing a defensive crisis, with Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao sidelined until the summer due to ACL injuries. Lucas Vazquez is undecided about extending his contract, while Jesus Vallejo is expected to leave in search of regular playing time. Meanwhile, David Alaba has been dealing with persistent injury problems, and both he and Antonio Rudiger are out of contract in 2026. Given these challenges, a defensive overhaul may be necessary.

Ancelotti is exploring several transfer options and is reportedly considering raiding his former club Everton for highly-rated centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite. The 22-year-old was handed his Premier League debut by Ancelotti during the 2019/20 season and has since developed into a key player for Everton. His impressive performances earned him a senior England call-up in 2024, and he played a crucial role in Everton’s survival battle last season alongside James Tarkowski.

Manchester United have been monitoring Branthwaite closely, but Ancelotti is keen to make a move before they reignite their interest. However, signing him won’t be easy. Branthwaite’s contract with Everton runs until 2027, and the Toffees are reportedly demanding around £75 million ($95 million) for him—a fee that Madrid is unwilling to pay.

While a move to Madrid is undoubtedly tempting, Branthwaite is considering how a potential transfer could impact his career. Despite his relative inexperience, he has impressed in key defensive metrics, finishing top among Premier League centre-backs in dribblers tackled (45) and ranking third for interceptions (50) in the 2023/24 season.

With Real Madrid in need of fresh defensive reinforcements, Branthwaite remains a serious option—but whether Ancelotti can secure his signature at the right price remains to be seen.
