The deal is expected to surpass the previous highest purchase price for a North American sports team—the $6 billion acquisition of the Washington Commanders in 2023, which translated to £4.8 billion at the time.

Last year, Forbes valued the Celtics at $6 billion (£4.6 billion), ranking them as the fourth-most valuable NBA franchise. The Golden State Warriors topped the list at $8.8 billion (£6.7 billion).

Lifelong Celtics Fan Takes Over

The new majority owner will be John Chisholm, co-founder and managing partner of the California-based private equity firm Symphony Technology Group. A Boston native and lifelong Celtics fan, Chisholm is deeply connected to the team's legacy.

"Growing up on the North Shore and attending college in New England, I have been a die-hard Celtics fan my entire life," Chisholm said.

"I understand how important the Celtics are to the city of Boston. The role this team plays in the community is unlike any other in the country. I also understand the responsibility that comes with leading this organization, and I’m ready for the challenge."

Ownership Transition Timeline

Wyc Grousbeck and his ownership group purchased the Celtics for $360 million (£277 million) in 2002, overseeing a period of success that included multiple NBA Finals appearances and a record-breaking 18th championship in 2023, when Boston defeated the Dallas Mavericks.

While the sale will mark a new chapter for the franchise, Grousbeck will remain in his role as CEO and governor until the end of the 2027-28 season.
