Jy Simpkin grew up in Mooroopna, a small town near Shepparton in Victoria, with his parents and older sister. He is of Yorta Yorta Aboriginal and European heritage, which he is very proud of.
In a touching moment, Simpkin shared that before his grandfather passed away, he asked Jy to give a thumbs-up after kicking his first AFL goal. Jy kept that promise and honored him during a game.
