India Set to Bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games
India has officially announced its plans to bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, aiming to bring the prestigious multi-sport event back to the country after successfully hosting it in 2010.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the central government are working together on a strong proposal to present to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), highlighting India’s readiness and capability to deliver a world-class sporting event.
Strong Backing from Government & IOA
The Indian government and IOA are fully committed to making this bid a success. Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur has expressed confidence that India is well-equipped to host the Games, pointing to the country’s proven track record with major international events such as the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the 2023 Cricket World Cup, and the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships.
IOA President PT Usha has also backed the bid, emphasizing India’s rapidly growing sports ecosystem, the emergence of top-tier Indian athletes on the global stage, and the success of leagues like the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Pro Kabaddi League (PKL). She believes hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2030 would further elevate India’s standing in international sports.
Potential Host Cities & Infrastructure
India is likely to propose either Delhi or Mumbai as the host city, given their existing world-class sports infrastructure.
Delhi, which hosted the 2010 Commonwealth Games, already has state-of-the-art facilities, including:
Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium – Athletics, opening & closing ceremonies
Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium – Gymnastics, wrestling
Talkatora Stadium – Boxing
Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range – Shooting
Mumbai, with its modern sporting facilities and strong corporate backing, is also a strong contender. Other cities like Bangalore and Ahmedabad could be considered, given their recent investments in sports infrastructure and growing interest in hosting international events.
Competition for the 2030 Bid
India will be competing against Canada (Hamilton), Australia, and the UK, which have also expressed interest in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games. However, India’s expanding sports industry, massive fan base, and government support could give it a competitive edge.
Economic & Sporting Impact
Hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games could be a game-changer for Indian sports. It would:
Boost India’s global sports reputation
Create thousands of job opportunities
Attract major infrastructure investments
Give Indian athletes a home advantage, increasing the chances of a record-breaking medal tally
Next Steps in the Bid Process
The IOA is set to submit a formal bid to the CGF in the coming months. Once the bid is submitted, CGF officials will inspect India’s sporting facilities before making a final decision. If successful, India will become only the second Asian country to host the Commonwealth Games twice, after Malaysia (1998).
With India’s sporting ambitions soaring, winning the 2030 Commonwealth Games bid would mark a historic moment for the country and further solidify its position as a major global sports hub.
