Lawson, who had been waiting for his big break, revealed that his promotion didn’t come as a complete surprise. Speaking at the F175 event in London, he shared that when he stepped in for Daniel Ricciardo at VCARB during the 2024 USA Grand Prix, he had a feeling that a bigger opportunity was on the horizon.

Red Bull’s 2024 season was a mixed bag. While Verstappen continued his dominance, securing his fourth consecutive drivers’ championship, the team lost its grip on the constructors’ title. McLaren emerged victorious, pushing Red Bull down to third in the standings. Meanwhile, Perez struggled to keep up, finishing a staggering 285 points behind Verstappen in P8.

Despite playing a crucial role in Red Bull’s back-to-back constructors’ championships in 2022 and 2023, Perez was let go at the end of 2024. The team decided to move forward with Lawson, betting on the young driver’s potential to bring fresh energy to the lineup.

For Lawson, this marks a huge step in his career. After proving his worth in the final six races of 2024 with VCARB, he now has the chance to establish himself alongside Verstappen in one of the most competitive seats in Formula 1.
