In his first game of the season, he rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown in a 33–13 win over Kent State. The following week, in a dramatic rivalry game against Pitt, Barkley helped lead Penn State back from a 28–7 deficit, scoring five touchdowns in the game. 

Although Penn State ultimately lost due to a late interception, Barkley’s performance was a standout moment. In week five, he scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime against Minnesota, rushing for a 25-yard touchdown after being held to just 38 yards in regulation.
